MD - Easton / Newman Field
The Membership Committee will consider a candidate who is eager to pursue recreational boating activities along with supporting the purpose of our club and who receives the recommendation of other members. In all cases the approval or opposition of a candidate by other members will have bearing on the decision to include a candidate as a new member.
If it is not obvious to the Membership Committee and the Board of Governors that a candidate fits the above standards, the application process will be suspended. This delay does not reflect upon the candidates as individuals, but rather reflects the membership priorities of the club.
PROCEDURES FOR PROPOSING NEW MEMBERS
A member who wishes to propose a candidate for membership should first contact the chairman of the Membership Committee. Proposals for new membership require two proposers; they are asked to read the guidelines for membership that appears on the previous page. Each proposer is required to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of their candidate and submit the letter to the Membership Chairman. The letters should describe the candidate’s yachting experience, his familiarity with TAYC and identify any members he or she knows. Letters of recommendation should include information pertaining to the quality and character of the candidate and how this person will contribute to our club.
Membership Committee Meets Proposer
The Membership Chairman may then invite the proposers to a meeting with the committee to discuss the candidate. The Membership Committee will decide whether to proceed with the proposal and if so encouraged, the proposers will be asked to submit a photo of their candidate and complete a Candidate Information Summary. The proposers are responsible for introducing the candidate to the club, its activities, and specifically to the Membership Committee and Board members.
Membership Committee Meets Candidate
When the Membership Committee is comfortable that a candidate is familiar with TAYC and wishes to participate in and support regattas and other Club activities the proposers may be asked to invite their candidate and spouse to a meeting with the Membership Committee. Following this meeting the Committee will decide on whether to recommend the candidate to the Board of Governors. The Membership Committee does not elect new members but may recommend candidates to the Board of Governors for their acceptance.
Candidate Meets the Board
The Membership Chairman may coordinate with the Commodore to arrange a social meeting among the candidate, the proposers, the Flag Officers and Board of Governors. After Board members have met with the candidate, the Board in private meeting will vote to grant preliminary approval of the candidate. If the vote is affirmative the candidate’s name will be posted at the Club for at least 28 days and be included in the TIDE for consideration and comment by club members.
Becoming a Member
After completing the time required for posting the candidate, the Board will take a final vote. More than one negative vote shall disqualify a candidate. If the vote is positive and there are vacancies the candidate will be considered a member upon payment of the appropriate initiation fees, membership certificate, and dues. If no vacancies exist, elected candidates will be put on a waiting list
There is no policy established to complete this process in a specific length of time. The Membership Committee will at their discretion endeavor to be as expedient as each proposal allows.
